History

In the past 200 years Algeria has experienced French colonization. A man by the name of Emir Abdelkader helped push colonization out of Algeria. Emir has since become a symbol for for Algerian resistance against colonialism and has a statue in Alger ctre. (English).

There has been a practice known as Ahellil. This practice is a mix of poetry, polyphonic chant, music, and dance. Ahelllil would be preformed at celebrations such as weddings or religious rights. However this practice has been slowly dying as the younger generation moves to the cities and doesn't learn Ahellli (UNESCO).
